71% of the Earth is made up of the five oceans of the world. The five oceans include the Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is located between North America, South America, Europe and Africa. The Arctic Ocean is located in the North, the Southern Ocean also known as the Antarctic Ocean is located in the South, and the Indian Ocean is surrounded by Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The Pacific ocean is between North America and Asia. Amongst the five of the world's oceans, the Pacific Ocean is the largest.
Who were the first people to go to sea?
Polynesians were the first people to go to sea. After archeologists recovered a chicken bone that dated way back they were able to conclude that Polynesian navigators reached America 100 years before Columbus did. In order to locate different directions, navigators from E. Polynesia memorized important facts like: the motions of specific stars, where they rise on the horizon of the sea, weather, and many other different strategies.
What is the HMS Challenger?
THe HMS challenger was a steam powered Royal Navy Pearl-class that set to sail on February 13, 1858. It came from Portsmouth, England on December 21 1872. It embarked on a four year journey to places like St. Paul's Rocks
What are Bays?
A bay is the event when large bodies of water seep onto land causing the pieces of land to block waves and reduce winds. An example of a bay is the famous San Francisco bay. Another example is Coronado Bay which is located here in San Diego.
What is a gulf?
A gulf is a deep inlet of sea that is surrounded by land and has a narrow mouth. Examples of gulfs are Gulf of Alaska, Gulf of California, and the largest gulf is the Gulf of Mexico.
Who were the vikings?
Vikings were voyagers who liked to take risks. They are explorer, merchants, pirates, traders, etc., that explored the sea to get to places and the settle in the areas. Many people were afraid to go to the west but vikings were daring therefore they went where ever they chose.

The Age of Discovery was a period that occurred from the 15th to 17th century. This was the start of European exploration in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania

Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus is a famous sailor and explorer. In 1492, he sailed and found a link from Europe to America. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (Spain) supported his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus sailed on the Santa Maria. Kids are taught a rhyme to remember him by:
"Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, in fourteen hundred ninety-two."
What are the major seas?
The major seas of the ocean are the Andaman Sea, Arabians Sea, Baltic Sea, Bering Sea, Black Sea, Caribbean Sea, East China Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Sea of Japan, and many other. The major seas are the bodies of oceans that are smaller than the ocean but not too small.

A peninsula is a piece of land that is almost surrounded by water or projects out into a body of water.
Isthmus
An Isthmus is a narrow strip of land with sea on either side, forming bridge like feature between two larger areas of land.
Ferdinand Magellan
Ferdinand Magellan was the first expeditioner that sailed from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean in 1519 to 1522. The expedition even passed the Pacific Ocean. Magellan was not able to finish this voyage because he was killed during the Battle of Magellan was not able to complete this expedition because he was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines.
Leif Ericson
Leif Ericson was recorded to be the first person to sail to Europe. He explored it 500 years before Columbus did. His father was the first to discover Norse colonies in Greenland. He was said to be born around c. 970 or c. 980. It is still unknown how he died but he died in the year 1020.
